in case you prefer some rather staggering YA myth, i will in basic terms recommend the suggestions you have already gained for Philip Pullman's His darkish components trilogy, the artwork of Alan Garner (crimson Shift is an extremely wonderful e book for toddlers or adults) and Susan Cooper's The darkish Is becoming sequence - this one is very advantageous for a Christmas present because of the fact the action in between the books (The darkish Is becoming) occurs over the Christmas era. The Chronicles of Narnia are a good determination too, in case you could forget (or recommend) the non secular factors, and The Hobbit is yet another classic. once you're searching for something with a similar premise to Harry Potter, then why don't you attempt The Worst Witch sequence via Jill Murphy, set in a school for witches. they don't have the epic overtones of Harry Potter, and that i'm unsure how nicely they had put off for an person reader, yet I enjoyed them whilst i became a newborn. extra: Hmm, I surely have been checking the checklist to work out what others cautioned (searching for some good new reads myself), so i'll voice my popularity of people who cautioned Joan Aiken, Tanith Lee (a number of her stuff could desire to be somewhat darkish and sexual for infants, however the Piratica books are youngster friendly and great) and likewise the daddy Christmas Letters via Tolkien - a spectacular e book, confirm you get it with the unique illustrations! i might additionally prefer to function a advice for Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons books - they're low myth quite than extreme myth like those i discussed before, yet they're purely somewhat sturdy, gripping journey memories with a spectacular humorous thread working via them - somewhat previous formed, yet none the extra serious for that.

Well, if the recipient likes mystery stories, Agatha Christie's autobiography is worth considering. For history buffs, I would recommend 'The Island at the Center of the World', by Russell Shorto. It's about the Dutch colony of New Netherlands, before the British took it over and re-named it New York. I received it as a Christmas gift myself a few years ago, and have been recommending it ever since.
