Well cause they are...I know it sounds simple but being alive is something that none of us should ever take for granted. Too many people's lives are cut short unexpectedly but a drunk driver, other types of accidents or illnesses. It is good to be alive!

Most people don't know how to express their true feelings, so they have a tendancy to take short cuts and give the appearence that everything is ok when deep down inside they are miserable. Example: Someone says; How are you doing? Are we going to say; "not very good, my kid got kicked out of school today and then was arrested" No, were going to say"Fine". See I could have answered this question the same way, but instead I chose to give you a complete answer. Hope it helps.

Ah, glad you asked.
When I answer that way it's because I'm having challenges or difficulties/disappointments that bum me out. So rather than answer (truthfully) something negative ("life sucks" "I'm mad because everything's going wrong" "I feel like I'm stupid" etc), the only thing nice or positive I can say is that generic 'oh well' kind of sentiment like "I'm glad to be alive" (also truthful).
'Coz, I'll tell you, some folks are keenly aware of how our language (especially when representing oneself) influences our reality (things said tend to at least TRY to come to pass), and keeping it positive is the one thing that will do the most to keep an attitude from falling.
For attitude, as 'they' say, is everything.

It's an expression to show that there could be worse things in this world than not getting what you want. It's called a positive attitude.... you know "It could be worse"

because they can't think of anything meaningful to say. Such people are usually shallow. You should say back "I'm thankful I graduated from high school."
