As for me, while growing up my mom had an anger problem, and she used to hit me when she was mad. It didn't matter what I was doing, she just needed to vent her anger. So I grew up being afraid of doing something wrong, not realizing there wasn't a 'right' thing I could do to keep from getting beat on by her.
I'm now in mid 40s and I'm still afraid at times to speak up or make mistakes, a part of me still being afraid of getting beat up.

low self esteem??? not likely...
growing up habits??? maybe...
lack of something???? most likely not decisive in what they want yet.
