You'll need: Plaster of paris, water, something to mix it in, and a pair of hands.
With the water in the mixing bowl/bucket, keep adding the plaster a bit at a time and stir it with your hands (you won't feel the lumps if you use a stick). When the plaster starts to settle on the surface a little, that's how you know you've added enough. Mix it a bit more so there's no lumps and it's ready to use. It'll start to get warm as it sets, which will take 10 minutes to half an hour, depending on the size of the cast. It'll be while before it's completely dry, though.

You can buy the plaster mixture from most good art shops and even some chemists. You mix with water, adding the water to the powder, not the other way round. Just follow the instructions on the pack, but don't make the mix too wet. It can take up to three days to dry according to how thick you apply it
