they will start you on something called Pitocin and it will help your uterus to contact and bring your labor on, its strong and it will hurt alot and so you might want something for the pain, if your labor takes too long after they break your water they might suggest a c-section, over due babies are large or stubborn, lol

I was induced to get my labor moving and what they did was break my water(a painless procedure) and then started a pitocin drip(through an IV line) to make the contractions stronger and help dilate the cervix. Things pick up pretty much immediately (within 5 minutes) of these procedures. How long it takes to have your baby still depends on whether or not it's your first (which is usually a longer labor...up to 36 hours even) baby. You will be fine!! Having a baby IS scary (even for 2nd and 3rd time moms), but you'll be amazed at how focused you get on resting between contractions and pushing.
My tip to you: pushing through the contraction (once the nurses tell you that you're ready to push) actually relieves the pain of the contraction. It feels good to push so don't be afraid of the pushing!!
Best luck!

Hey! You better relax to begin with. There is nothing to be scared about. Once you are induced, the labor pains will start slowly and steadily and you will be working your way towards a natural delivery. They will monitor your baby's heartbeat and yours from time to time. Do your breathing as you did in your prenatal classes (if you went to them) and tide over the contractions. If you did not go for these classes, make sure to breathe in and breath out well (deep breathing) in the beginning of the contraction and towards the end breath out (huffing out the air as you reach the end). When it is time to rupture your membrane they will do so or your water bag may break on it's own and you will drain. Try your best not to take an epidural. If you just can't manage the pain at all, ask for one. Take sips of water and juices or have half a bowl of hot soup regularly to keep you hydrated and energized. Everything will go well. Make sure to have enough supportive family members around. Atleast one of them should stay with you always. You are going to see your baby soon. :-) Sleep and rest well before you go, this could be the last bit of proper rest you will have in a while.

I was unduced. They started out with the prostaglandin gel...they insert it up onto your cervix...ten you lay still for an hour and they monitor the baby. If nothing happens they do it again 8 hours later. I still had nothing happen..they sent me home the next day. My water broke at home...went back to the hospital...no labour yet. The next day they started a pitocin drip. Everyone reacts differently to being induced.

While everybody is different...For me it was pretty simple. I arrived at the hospital, went to the admissions desk and got several bracelets, hubby & I walked down to Labor & Delievery, they put us in a room, I got a fancy gown and then they did the IV and asked a million and one questions, started the pitocin. Both times they broke my water pretty much right away. Then several hours later contractions got real strong. With my first child it took 10 hours from getting in the room until delivery and with the second 7 hours. Everything was pretty much go with the flow and calm. I say don't be scared, be exicted and happy...you will soon get to hold you lil one..
~*~*~Good Luck! Congrats!~*~*~

well when I was induced my water had already broken but if yours hasnt then they will probably go in and break it for you and if that doesnt start contractions then they will put an IV in and start a pitocin drip which will make your contractions start and I have to say with my experience the pitocin makes the contractions alot stronger than they would be normally and hurt more. anyway Good Luck to you.

Not alot. They just hook you up to an IV and a certain medicine goes through that. Pictocin. YOu start to have contractions and that is it. Some times they use a type of vaginal suppository that can also induce labor. It depends on the doctor. I was hooked up to the IV for my induction , and my friend had that vaginal suppository for hers.

Here is a bunch of good info about induction of labor:
http://www.childbirth.org/articles/labor/induction.html
Considering the risks of induction, if it was me I'd ask for a nonstress test first to see how baby was doing, and if there was no medical reason for induction I'd decline it. Length of gestation in itself is not a valid medical reason for induction, as there is a wide range of normal gestation length. Your baby may not have been born yet simply because s/he is not ready to be born.
