we are numbers, statistics and demographics. Our culture is designed to benefit the majority, which it just about achieves. Suggestions for a better way of doing things would be welcomed; I would start with abolishing politicians, they just cost money and in the case of the UN they just cost lives.

We are seriously 'Both' ~ though some of us are more seriously so than others, given the amount of debt that the average Consumer type Person has, as reported in the Press of late.

At its simplest, personal growth can be put into a kick start through the recognition of the need for it, and then cutting back on the consumerism. However, clearly, consumerism is an essential part of the economy ~ though I'd rate Personal Growth as more desirable.

When I was around the age of 16, I remember listening to radio / TV reports on 'the NEED to produce more cars' or, that 'the record production were to be exceeded' ~ and wondering 'Why this was necessary!' Did we want to fill up all the streets with them? When was 'enough' ENOUGH!

I wish I'd thought LOUDER then so that my voice was heard.

Sash.

Consumers in every sense of the word. Our culture encourages us to believe that keeping up with the Jones's IS personal growth and that we can't possibly be happy without it.

Whoh! Now you're talking!

You are completely correct in your assessment. We are consumers first, people second.

Yes our culture is engineered to sustain the economy rather than sustain personal growth.

I'm not sure its deliberate but it certainly turns out this way. (sometimes I feel like such a consumer and its an ugly feeling)
