My sister-in-law is thinking about moving to NC, she has 2 kids, one is 12 and one is 14. Where are the best schools near Charlotte or Greensboro?

It amazes me that NC has one of the best university systems in the US, but its public schools rank so low.

Chapel Hill is about the only district in the state known for having a decent school system. There are always private schools.

Tell her to check out the schools in Chatham County. It is a great place to raise kids and the school systems are ranked higher than most counties in NC. (silk hope school is ranked 10th highest elementary school in the state). Chatham county is only 20 miles south of Greensboro.

The colleges in North carolina are some of the best in the US, and NC is a lot better than most states about pushing a college education. They have incredible grants, etc. that help with schooling. The thoughts of the State Colleges and the availability, and low cost for residents, was what brought me here 4 years ago.

Union County (just south of Mecklenburg County) has some of the highest rated schools in the state. (My 12 year old is in middle school in Union County) Try this site for school report cards: http://www.ncreportcards.org/src/
There are also some schools that have high ratings in Charlotte-Mecklenburg as well. Feel free to contact me if I can help you in any way.

Anything but the public school system. If you can afford private schooling, then do so.
