'good friend', 'close friend' 'great friend' 'best friend' 'true friend'
English has quite a few adjectives for friends. Please explain each word to be distinct. Are they all same?
As my point of view, 'good friend' has the lightest meaning as you describe friendship. no?

People use these very differently. For example, some would say "close personal friend" when I would say "intimate friend," and refer to a sexual relationship. Some would use either or both of those terms without the slightest hint of sexuality.

All the adjectives derive from the school-yard use of the term "best friend." Most kids will tell you that you can have more than one "best friend." Now, your English teacher would argue that "best" would imply only one, but that's not the way with friendships. Good friend or close friend might be more accurate, but best friend gets over-used in this way.

True friend, on the other hand, is usually and attempt to point out that he or she has stood by in a time of adversity. A true friend is one who is beside you when the going gets rough. My true friend Lexi, now my surrogate daughter, for example, who stayed by me and helped me when My Steve committed suicide last December. That, my dears, is a true friend.

Good friend - means the person is well liked and you enjoy their company when you see them.

Close friend- someone you trust, this person probably would know some confidential things or secrets- you confide in them a little more.

Great friend- A friend you usually find wonderful and fun to be with, you enjoy their company and perhaps they have helped you when in need.

Best friend- someone you usually spend a lot of time with and share secrets etc. and go places together.

True friend- someone who has been there for you and you can trust even though you may not see them often.

Having 'said' that, in the end it comes down to each person's own definition.. but the above is a general idea.
