what cable do you need to connect your laptop to your TV to use it as a monitor, and how much do they cost roughly? and does your tv need to have any particular ports specific for this

Your laptops graphic card must have a TV out capability (SHVS or s video) and support dual monitor mode. SHVS however does not have any audio capability. You can get an shvs to scart converter (or 3 lead phono) that are colour coded leads which you can't get confused by.
Setting up is pretty minimal fuss. Turn everything off to start with, set up and plug in leads and then turn everything on. If you are using XP you may be notified that new hardware has been found - just follow the prompts. If not right click on your desktop ->Properties->settings->advanced and choose your graphics card from there. Can't give much more info because i dont know what graphics card you have!
Hope this helps..and if you dont have the leads...
From eBay: 10m TV-Out Cable Kit - Scart/SVHS/Audio to PC/Laptop AV
Cost is minimal around about £10 and no your tv does not have to have any specific ports for it. If your tv is modern it should have the necessary inputs and will also have channels dedicated to AV or SHS. If your TV is not modern..er..buy a new TV :)

You need to have a VGA Cable to connect your laptop to your tv.But u need to make sure ur tv has a VGA Cable port and ur laptop.Mostly all laptops have a VGA Port but i doubt if ur tv has one.Or u can use a hdmi cable also, mostly modern laptops like Windows 8 or 2013 Windows 7 laptops come with a hdmi port and again ur tv needs to have one hdmi port too.The difference between the VGA Cable and HDMI Cable is that hdmi will give u a High Definition Picture Quality.I will upload some pics to help u.The blue one is VGA and the other blue thing is the VGA's port which should be on ur laptop and tv.I HAVE TO PUT THEM IN SEPARATE POSTS BCUZ IT DOESNT GO IN ONE

Yes the picture will be terrible. Particularly if you have an older TV the only television which could actually accomplish an OK picture would be an HDTV or lcd screen tv,because they have the resolutions that are high enough to view computer graphics. Your TV (if it isn't HD) will handle a 800 x 600 picture at really low resolution, this is the worst quality available for your graphics card. As for VGA cards, any of them with the S-Video out will give you enough performance for a television as your monitor .

Your laptop has to have a tv out port or an S-Video port. Some new tvs also have a pc connection socket.

It depends on the inputs available on your TV. Many televisions have VGA or DVI-D inputs. Also, many newer computers have HDMI outputs. I would compare your computer's outputs with your television's inputs and see if a simple cable will do the trick. If you've already done this with no luck, you can check online, as many adapters are cheap and readily available. One example would be a VGA to composite video (RGB) adapter. Computers commonly have a VGA out (standard monitor cable) and most televisions have a composite video input. You'd then also probably need a 1/8 plug to RCA audio adapter for the sound. Good luck.

Some laptops (even my 5+ year old Dell Dimension) have SVHS out. You can use this port to connect to the TV, but you may need to get a composite to SCART converter (few pounds on eBay).

It's fairly easy.

You can go to wal mart, radio shack, or most all of your computer stores a get a "S" video cable it will plug to the back og your laptop and if your TV has the place to connect...should connect both of them.

I have a S-Vhs out on my laptop.

I can use a S-vhs lead direct to my TV with no problem.

If you have no s-vhs in, but have a scart socket, you can get a converter from s-vhs.

PC World sells this as a kit.
