Hallow my friend I've had this problem and it was caused by having my original sim registered to my phone.this was an option
offered as a security measure in case my phone was lost/stolen it would only work with the sim i registered to it.
Try using the original sim in another phone on the same network it should not work as its registered to another phone i got round the problem by contacting cos service and as long as you have the right answers you should be ok
only other thing can think of your upgrading to 3g and your phone doesn't support it best of luck kevT

First check everything is okay like the battery etc. and try switching it off and on. If that doesn't work it may be locked- try unlocking it by typing 12345 in the security code area - it should work- if I am right , it may have asked you for a code -if so , do what I said, then it will work ok.

If it is a new phone, you probably will have to get a new SIM. The old SIM's don't work in new phones cos there GPRS not just WAP.
