Loved this film more than I can express but feel the major weakness was the inclusion of Jack Nicholson and all the baggage/schtick he brings along. Sure, he is a god and sure he was great in Chinatown and As Good As It Gets but now he just seems 'over the top'too often -- kinda' like Brando or Orson Welles when they stayed too long. Alec Baldwin or Chris Walken could have played the Costello role to the betterment of the film as a work of cinematic art -- that is, without as much disruption to the movie's chemistry. Crazy, I know so let's hear it!!!!!

Hmm, I never thought about that, but you're on to something.... Maybe it would have been better without Nicholson. Of course, they payed a lot to have him, but he does really carry a lot into a film with him. It's hard to see him just as a character and not as "Jack Nicholoson"
I don't think Alec Baldwin would have been good for the part though, maybe Christopher Walkin..... but he has a "crazy" thing a lot like Jack does...
I don't know who would have been a better casting choice. But at any rate, the movie was absolutely FANTASTIC!

hi, Sorry to throw a curve ball into this question yet neither; those 2 gents are beneficial problematical to triumph over with their abilities yet i could ought to assert the only actor that should good them could be Anthony Hopkins. He inspired me in his place as Hannibal Lector and he substitute into so amoral and talked with such extreme point good judgment and consumer-friendly experience approximately why he did the so pronounced as evil issues he did that he substitute into able to get your interest and least and make you extremely think of the place he substitute into coming from; you very almost have been given to love him in a fashion and have been happy to be certain him smash out interior the top. i ought to nicely think of devil who's pronounced as the great deciever lead peole's thoghts off track in this style. As for an evil, frightening demonic form character i think of Walken is extra suitable proper for that than De Nero. Regards, Michael Kelly

Personally, the movie was excellent. Why change a thing at all? Everyone fit the roles perfectly.
