Well besides my Avatar and screen name saying it all I'll elaborate.
Communism is so damn romaticised todays as been a form of liberation and equality for all but what most people don't realise is that in communist societies everyone is equal but not in a good way. You work equally as hard, you get equally as little money and in the end Party members are more "equal" than everyone else.
People (like here) ramble on about how great communism is on paper and how wonderful it must be in it's purest form. What I want to point out here is that EVERY communist country hasn't followed communism 'by the book' and have always turned into a terrible society where everything is collectivised, the Party rules all with an iron fist and all suffer and work insanely hard and in the end get lied to. This is what communism is and has become synonymous with.
What it isn't synonymous (for most) is utter evil. It has claimed more lives than anything else in the world. Around 100,000,000 people have died because of communism. Add up the death tally for China, USSR, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cuba, etc and it will reach this total but everyone calls Nazism the epitome of evil. Communists did everything the Nazis did but still communism is so romanticised.
Lets look at Russia to answer your Q of people wanting it's return. Go to the link (political parties in Russia now) and you'll notice that so many have the word "people's" or "communist" or "red" or even "bolshevik" in the title. It could really happen there but never like they once were.
I can sort of understand the desire of so many Russians for communism's return. Think about it... under communism Russia was a world power that equalled the US. Now they are a shadow of their former selves. I hear crime and corruption is rife in Russia, neo-Nazis are running around all over and the quality of life isn't so good (heard this all from Russians myself). People there probably see communism as a way to regain that lost political power and restore control over everything like in the days of the Reds.

All the communist believe that communism is better. But not too much remained from this breed.
But seriously... The original ideas of Marx and Engels regarding a better society where every person has not only equal rights but also equal opportunities is still valid in still the best theory. The problem is in execution. Stalinism or Maoism are not communism.
According to Marx, communism will arrive only after people will reach the level of recognition for longing for such system. We are not there. We are not mature. Any regime nowadays claiming to be communist is just pure dictatorship under the cover.

The reality is that the 'communist system' probably is the best & fairest way to successfully manage very small groups of people, it just doesn't work as the group gets bigger because someone has to "be in charge", and humans are naturally greedy, so the leaders usually succumb to their greed. People who have previously lived under communist rule, were freed, but now want it back are usually those who benefitted most under a system that attempts to 'level things out'. If you are unskilled, unhealthy or not very motivated, communist sytems will always work better for you as an individual, but at the expense of everyone else!

If you could actually truly get people to not have the human nature of wanting more than the next guy, then it actually could work.
However, communism does not take into account that people can be selfish and greedy. That is why Capitalism is so great...it takes advantage of the selfishness and greed in human nature to produce for the common good.

communism in it's most pure form is the perfect system. Unfortuantly human nature is far to corrupt. The system relies on everyone so anyone can mess it up. Since there were thousands messing up the existing systems you refer to, it had and has no chance. That's one reason democracy is successful. It is suited to, and relies on the immoral corrupt human nature.
