how is that to much?

1 inch of fish per gallon-

4 small schooling fish(normally about 1 inch each)=4 gallons taken
+
1 guppy(1.5 inches)=5.5 gallons so far
+
A few small snails (not even an inch each)=about 7 gallons taken
+
one live plant

MY tank is a ten gallon

Be careful with the snails they breed a lot and can over run the tank. My neighbors tank if full of them now. Also you might wanna get a couple more guppies, like 2 more, but 3 more would be better. Guppies can be a little bullyish with no other of there kind. The 5 schooling fish will be good. As for the plant, plant care is not extremely hard. Get a liquid fertilizer from the pet store and try to get the plants that have th roots contained in a cup or in this fabric stuff.

Have fun! I'm adding to my 28 gallon tank right now. Today my mom is going to take me to the pet store!

I would only get one snail, they have reputation for multiplying like mad and overrunning a tank, so be CAREFUL. Get something that will eat the baby snails.
Plus, you only want about 10 inches worth of adult size fish for 10 gallons worth of tank.
I don't know anything about plants, so I can't help you there!

You need to test for Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate! Then if you get more into it, test your pH too.

Five small schooling fish, your one guppy, a few plants, and a snail, shouldn't be too much for a ten gaollon tank, rember one inch of fish per gallon! Also, you may want to get a few ottos to keep the bottom of your tank clean!

Oh, and I would like to caution about danios.. though I do have some in a ten gallon, they will soon be moved to my 30 gallon... they are fast swimmers and do better if they have more room!

Good Luck!

for plants, they need good lighting. A bunch or cluster of Annacharis or elodea is perfect. watch snails because they can reproduce on their own and too many of them can result in devastating high amounts of ammonia. Fish can hang out together. A nice 10g set up would consist of 1 or 2 pair of Fancy guppies, a few swordtails or mollies, a good schooling fish is found in the danio family of fish. Zebra danio are very hardy and inexpensive as are the pearl danio. Be cautious of black mollies as they are susceptible to "shimmy" and other disease. Marble mollies or lyre tail mollies are much more hardy

Some algee would be good and fake rocks and plants and make a water filter as well as little decoration for the tank.
