I have used Google Adsense since June 2003, when it was first opened to the public. It is an advertising program that works extremely well with my type of website. In my first month alone, I earned $500, and the following month it grew to $1,200. Now I earn 5-digits a month from Google Adsense

The first step is to go to Google Adsense and read about the program policies and their help center http://www.google.com/adsense . Google is well known for kicking out publishers caught generating invalid clicks (e.g. clicking on own ads, buying low quality traffic, asking people to click on the ads, etc) so it is important to read what you can and cannot do with the program

Note though that Adsense is a program that is not for everyone. More than the layout or format of ads, the key to success is choosing a topic that attracts people looking to spend money. The responsiveness of audience to the ads is critical.

A travel website that provides information on travel to Spain will attract visitors looking for ways to arrange their travel and spend money on their vacation to Spain. Your site provides the info, but the ads will provide hotels, travel agencies, tourist destinations, car rentals -- ads that are likely to get the attention of the users of your site. This is a site that will most likely do well with Adsense. However, if you are a gaming website where the main purpose of the user is to play games on your site, then Adsense will not perform as well.

As for other ways to earn money from advertising, here are alternatives to Adsense

Yahoo! Publishing Network (currently in beta and available to US publishers only) http://publisher.yahoo.com/
Intellixt http://vibrantmedia.com/site/web_01a5.htm
Quigo Adsonar http://www.quigo.com/adsonarexchange.htm
IndustryBrains http://www.industrybrains.com
Commission Junction Evolution http://www.cj.com
Kanoodle Brightads http://www.kanoodle.com/about/brightads.html
Clicksor http://www.clicksor.com/affiliate_programs.php
Contextweb http://www.contextweb.com/
Bidclix http://www.bidclix.com/
Bidvertiser http://www.bidvertiser.com/

You can also join an advertising network. Advertising networks are organizations that aggregate Web sites that offer advertising space, and sell banner ads (and other advertising options) across them. Traffic requirement is often a minimum of 5,000 monthly impressions, although many do not accept sites hosted by free page services.

Burst Media http://www.burstmedia.com
Fastclick (ValueClick). http://www.fastclick.com
Advertising.com. http://www.advertising.com
Tribal Fusion http://www.tribalfusion.com

Then consider affiliate programs. Here are places where you can find affiliate programs

Commission Junction http://www.cj.com
Linkshare http://www.linkshare.com
Clickbank http://www.clickbank.com

Yes, I use Adsense for both my blog and my website. I haven't made too much for it personally because my site is not optimized for Adsense clicks (the Adsense bar is at the bottom of the site). But that is simply because an affiliate sale or a newsletter sign up is worth more to me then an 8 cent click. My blog has the ads on top so those are more optimized for clicks.

On the other hand if you optimize your site for Adsense clicks then it can generate a nice amount of money for you.

I haven't used it personally...but by using Firefox/Greasemonkey, I block all Google ads in Firefox. So...it wouldn't be effective for people who use that program.
