She needs to go back to the doctors. A virus or infection can cause asthma and this should be checked out or she will just keep suffering. It could be that she has a chest infection and needs a course of antibiotics. If she smokes she needs to give up. There is also the fact this could be something more serious. A long standing cough can signal lung cancer so either way she needs to go back to her GP for a check up. I'm sure she will be fine but it's better to be safe than sorry xx

Does she smoke? Is she smokes or passively smokes then this is probably the cause of her cough.
Pholcodine is good to suppress night-time coughing. But remember, we cough for a reason and it is not always good to suppress a cough. There are also certain foods that can aggravate a cough. Try speaking to her GP about it with her. Allergies/smoking, etc, are the usual culprits.

If the cough is bad and standard cough meds are not working she needs to go back to the doc and get something stronger. You didn't mention why she was coughing but if she doesn't have a cold or the flu they need to find out what is causing the cough too. See the doc and get something stronger for her.

Tell her quit smoking if she does.

Honey and lemon and hot water is good.

To be honest if it is not a smokers cough then there could be an underlying cause. If the doc continues to fob her off, please get a second opinion.

Some causes of persistent cough - asthma, bronchitis, chronic obstructive airway disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chest infection, pneumonia, and of course smoking.

Good luck.

It's not a home remedy but tell your mum to get Codiene Phosphate from her doctors, they will stop it within the hour.
