If you have been told you are going to be made redundant then you may well be, it could come down to what resettlement is being organised.

If how ever you are simply changing jobs I would suggest not, and for the sake of any reference you might want that you do it on a day off or take a holiday. Phoning in sick is a very lame way to do it

Not really. In fact, it's very rude to apply for a new job in the middle of your current one, you won't get a very good recommendation as well since your superior will feel like you didn't have enough passion for your job if you treat it as simply your money-source and not an important commitment. In this case, you'd have an even more difficult time since you'd be someone who doesn't care about the job and thus is not effictient! If you plan to resign, resign first and then go on to find a job.

tell your boss you need to take care of some "personal buisness"
don't just call in the day you're going for the interview, do it ahead of time. if they are not a jerk then they will probably give you the time. They don't have to know what it is.

if they won't give you the time then call in sick.


but this one could backfire because they can legally request a doctor's note to return to work

Yes but there under no obligation to pay you for your time. You may still be required to request time off as you would a day off within a notice period ie, 2 days or 2wks in advance.

No you are only entitled by law to time off for medical appointments.

You can take some of your entitled holiday but you don't get an extra entitlement to look for other work !!!!!

If one of my employees asked me a questions like this, I would probably offer to give them all the time off they wanted. If fact, they wouldn't even have to come back to work for me.

No you can't ask for time off to interview for another job. Even if iyou aren't expecting to be paid for your time off, you can't ask an employer this question.

Yeah right,
If I were you I would ask the boss If you could use the company car. That way you would get paid for the day, Also they might pick up the lunch tab.

Demand it ! Stick up for your rights.

Most definitely not. If you've already given notice, you can *ask* nicely whether you can have time off - but you're certainly not entitled to it!

Not really it all at the managers decretion. If you speak nicely and say that you will make up the time lost he may say yes but he is not abliged to.
