Converting Fractions and Decimals

1. Express 3/5 as a decimal.

.To do this try to get the denominator into a power
of 10 (i.e.,: 1,10,100,1000,...). To do this, first note that
2*5 = 10, so multiply the denominator (bottom) by 2:

3 3 3 2 3*2 6
--- = --- * 1 = --- * --- = ----- = ----
5 5 5 2 5*2 10
Dividing by ten shifts the decimal to the
left one place to find:

6/10 = 0.6

This method is fast if the denominator is easy to change, but something like 3/41 would be more trouble than it is worth.

.2. Express 0.15 as a rational fraction

This is the same thing in reverse. We need to get the decimal into a fraction and then cancel common factors. We note that 0.15 = 15/100,from method 2 above. We need to get the factors of 15 and 100. Note that the factors must be prime numbers (a prime number only has itself and 1 as factors). Factors are whole numbers which will divide a whole number into a whole number without any remainder. An example
best illustrates this:

6 = 2*3 = 6*1 Thus 1,2,3,6 are factors of 6
3 = 3*1 Thus 1,3 are factors of 3 and 3 is prime

Now to get a prime factorization of a number, we express the number as the product of its smallest factors which are prime numbers, not 1:

6 = 2*3
12 = 2*2*3

Our factors are:

15 = 3*5
100 = 2*2*5*5

Now just cancel the common factors (one 5 in this case):

15 3*5 3 3
----- = --------- = ------- = ----
100 2*2*5*5 2*2*5 20

3/20 is the answer.

In general it is only necessary to do the last line, which actually is the work in the problem. The matter has been shown in sine detauk to show what needs to be done and why .

You can turn any fraction into a decimal by:

Dividing the bottom number (denominator) into the
top number (numerator).

You can use either long division or a calculator to do this work.

Be very careful with your placement of the decimal point and
you should have no problems.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Decimals to fractions...

you can turn any decimal into a fraction by placing the decimal
number over one and a series of zeros. The series of zeros must be equal in length to the number of digits to the right of the decimal in the decimal number. Drop the decimal in the numerator when you do this.

Example:

decimal number = 0.308

Fraction = 308 / 1000

Now, a fraction has been created. however some people
insist on making the number of the fraction as small as
possible (reducing them). In the example above, you could
take out a 2 from the top and the bottom to make the new
fraction = 154 / 500 which is the same fraction only smaller
in printed numbers. What? Oh, yes. you can take out another
2 can't you... So that fraction could also be written as 77 / 250.

and I think that is about as far as you can take that one down...

Keep in mind certain easy numbers like
0.250 = 1/4, 2/8, 4/16, etc.
0.500 = 1/2, 2/4, 4/8, 8/16, etc.
0.750 = 3/4, 6/8, 12/16, etc.
0.125 = 1/8, 2/16, etc.
0.375 = 3/8, 6/16. etc.
and so forth

Fractions to decimals - divide the top number by the bottom number.

Decimals to fractions - put whatever's after the decimal point on top of 100 and then find the lowest common denominator.

To convert fraction to decimal;
divide the numerator (top number of a fraction) by the denominator (bottom number of a fraction. When the division shows a remainder put a decimal point in the numerator and the answer, and 'zero's' after the decimal point of the numerator and continue dividing as though it was a non-decimal number.
e.g.
1/8 to decimal
8) 1.000000( 0.125
- 0.8
0.20
- 0.16
0.040
- 0.040
0.000 ans = 0.125
To convert decimals to fractions place the decimal over 1 followed by the decimal point and the same number of zero's as there decimal digits. and cancel down e.g.
0.375 to fraction

0.375
_____
1.000 this now reads 375/1000 = 75/200 = 15/40 = 3/8
There special rules for decimals recurring to infinity.

Fractions to decimals: e.g. 2/5
Do the long division of 2 divide by 5 (with 2 on the inside of the lines) or press 2/5 on a calculator.

Decimals to fractions: e.g. 0.34 = 34/100 as the last number (i.e. 4) is in the hundredth position, and so the denominator is 100. You then reduce this fraction (if possible) to the lowest term, i.e. 17/50.

just divide the fraction as it is.. for example, 3/4 if you divide it, the answer will be in decimal.the result is 0.75. if you want to convert a decimal to fraction, just count the number of units you have after the decimal point, for example 0.41, there are 2 units so you will remove the decimal point and divide the given 100. the result in fraction will be 41/100

fractions to decimal---top divided by the bottom

decimals to fractions--put the number without decimal over one with as many zeros as decimal points and reduce...check it by dividing the top # by the bottom

for example----.8=8/10 (one with 1 zero)--------.08=8/100(one with 2 zeros)------.18=18/100(one with 2 zeros)......but you should reduce all of these

there may also be a key on your calculator that helps ....look for a key with a b/c ---if you have that key it really helps going from fractions to decimals and back...you might also have a key that has f<>d....that is to change fracions to decimals and back...might be a second function key though

Fractions to decimals is easy: just press the = on your calculator. Once you're in decimals, you're in a better place. No need to go back to fractions.
