I'd hope the archetype of the successful man who needs a woman *behind* him is becoming a thing of the past. Why not *next* to him? (And, of course, it's worth adding that we shouldn't assume the person with the "successful man" is a woman. What about successful men who are gay or bisexual?)

And what about the successful woman? What support does *she* get?

Actually, I think both sexes would benefit from having a "wife" in the traditional sense of the word. Many of us could do with having someone there solely to support us and playing a "behind the scenes" role but couldn't solely play that role ourselves, as we need outside action and achievement to feel fulfilled. Indeed, there isn't anything wrong with a person taking a purely supportive role if it's what they truly want, as an individual, but I'd say that when such a set-up is taken as a given, it's tantamount to oppression (in this case, the oppression of women).

NB: I don't understand your last sentence. When you say "try to explore your feeling", are you referring to the need for the answerer to examine their own subjectivity? You also say "imagine what it is like to be the person concerned". Exactly who *the person concerned* is in your statement is not clear. The successful man in the tableau presented? Or the woman "behind" him?

I think behind every successful man or woman is a very supportive and understanding man or woman whichever the occasion maybe. People are like animals, somethings they have evolved more than animals, It is like Horses or Mule, if they do not work well together in harness nothing gets done or any other animals that works or lives in packs that hunts for food or provide s protection for their mates (etc) I think that Men and women that are together and become successfull, work to together well are very supportive of each other and can have open honest conversation, have evolved further than people that cannot achieve this as man and wife or whatever, it is easy to see other peoples faults and not see your own but when see your faults as a pair and not dwell on each others and work out the faults it is easy to be supportive. But then there is some people that see someone faults and use them to bash them instead of helping them. No finger pointing
WOW THAT IS ALL HEAVY BUT IT MEANS SOMETHING TO ME

I believe that if you are successful that may be an effect of your significant other but, then the question rises If your successful and do not have a partner then why are you successful?? Everyone is different and some people need someone there to push them further. Then you have the people that are motivated enough to get something done without anyone.

yes I believe behind every successful man there is a woman...She may be his mother, his sister, an aunt, or even a special teacher or neighbor..because in order to be a success you have to use all the things learned growing up. We all are guided by the people in our young lives and good examples of how to treat each other, and a truly successful man would have learned how to treat women, in order to have a balanced sense of being.

just my opinion , and hope that my sons be successful in life and look back to see the many women that helped him to get there.

No, I don't necessarily believe this is true for all men.

However, behind MANY successful businessmen are their executive secretaries. Behind many successful Presidents were their wives: Clinton had Hillary, Roosevelt had Eleanor...

Oh, yes- let's not forget the old saying, "Never send a boy to do a man's job-send a woman."

I think that this saying is very true, the world riches men when they make speeches etc always thank their wives. This is because usually unless they traded her in for a new model when they hit the big time, that woman is there giving him the support he needs, lending a hand being his rock, while he works all the hours that god sends so that he can be successful.

However to be that woman she has to be strong and is usually the strong of the two, because she will be looking after him, and rising a family and making sure that he doesn't forget to visit his mum and see to his children.

I think it's the case very often, but really depends on the peronality of the man! Some are lazy and disorganised, but some are organised, motivated and driven! So it's a sweeping generalisation. I do know a lot of couples where the man is pushed buy the wife to get things done but I also know some very lazy women!
