1/2 + 1/4 + 1/5 = 19/20 [ the first three kids]

remainder = 49 coins

20/20 - 19/20 = 1/20

therefore, 1/20 = 49 coins

if 1/20 = 49, then, 19/20 =

19 x 49 = 931 coins

altogether = 1/20 + 19/20

= 49 + 931

= 980 coins in the collection.

I got the same answer too..
My working:
Let the total number of coins be X,
oldest 1/2X,
next 1/4X,
the other next! 1/5X,
youngest 49,

Therefore:
1/2X +1/4X +1/5X + 49 = X
X (1/2+1/4+1/5) + 49 = X
X (19/20) + 49 = X
49 = X - 19/20X
49 = 1/20X
X = 49 * 20
X = 980

20x - 10x - 5x - 4x = 49*20
x = 980
