The basic idea behind an electromagnet is extremely simple: By running electric current through a wire, you can create a magnetic field.
By using this simple principle, you can create all sorts of things, including motors, solenoids, read/write heads for hard disks and tape drives, speakers, and so on
An electromagnet works on the principle that an electric current not only allows electrons to flow in a circuit, but also generates a small magnetic field. When a wire carrying electricity is coiled, the magnetic field becomes even stronger. Iron or steel objects surrounded by this coiled electric wire also become magnetized. This combination of electronic energy, coiled wiring and conductive metal object forms the basis of an electromagnet

Nik,
Electromagnet is a device in which magnetism is produced by an electric current. Any electric current produces a magnetic field, but the field near an ordinary straight conductor is rarely strong enough to be of practical use. A strong field can be produced if an insulated wire is wrapped around a soft iron core and a current passed through the wire.

An electromagnet is a type of magnet in which the magnetic field is produced by a flow of electric current. The magnetic field disappears when the current ceases.

electromagnet is a combination of solenoid (a metallic coil) and a soft iron core.
an electromagnet is a temporary magnet.its strength can be increased by
increasing the number of turns of the coil
and increasing the supply of current.
you dont use any other core(i e steel ) because then they become parmanent magnet as soft iron core has a tendency of losing and gaining magnetic field easily but steel when acquires magnetic field can not lose it and becomes a permanent magnet.

electricity and magnetism are closely related and interchangeable too.
when current flows through wires it creates magnetism.
when you wave a wire past a magnet it makes electricity.
