you could use play-doh to form it, mixing the colors to get the look you want,,,,,it will harden as it dries, you also can use a past of flour, salt and add water in to make a dough , then form it also, use food color to color it,,,,,,,as to making it erupt, you can put a dish/glass in it, add baking soda to it, then when you want it to erupt, put in white vinegar,,,,,if your talking about a very simple project,,,,,,,

Classic holiday project.
For the magma.....use red food color in some vinegar.
Place some baking soda in your 'volcano' (my kids used a babyfood jar surrounded by tinfoil with the foil painted brown and green for the volcano) when ready to 'erupt' add the red vinegar to the baking soda and it will foam and run down the sides!!

U can make the base by POP (plaster of paris)
& then painting it
the effect of magma is given by putting water & immmediately adding cornflour
(add a lil' red food coloring in2 the cornflour mixture)
Its a good idea I've tried it & I got the 2nd prize in Science @ the National Level of Science Kids held in Canada
Rs.10000 & a desktop computer !!

try bicarbonate of soda and vinegar,these react with each other but don't use alot,add red food colouring to give the effect of magma

do the structure of the volano with brown clay.for magma u can pour some red coloured water.for smoke u can place an inscence stick.
