The other answers were pretty good. Here are the things they left out:
Get Gmail invites from this site http://www.bytetest.com/ ( it's completely automated; click and you're at the Gmail sign-up page )
What's so good about Gmail:
1. You've got a huge amount of storage for your email: almost 3 GB
2. You can use Google Docs and Spreadseets (web based word editor and excel spreadsheets )
3. You can create your own web site with localized downloads ( 100 MB ) and tons of features.
4. You can use Google Reader ( web based rss, xml, atom.. reader ); it's better than most desktop applications ( keyboard shortcuts ... and lots of features )
5. You can use their calendar.....
6. A lot of other things (all free)
7. You don't need to switch right away; create your account see how it works; and switch when you feel comfortable (like me)

Google Mail is an experiment in a new kind of webmail, built on the idea that you should never have to delete mail and you should always be able to find the message you want. The key features are:
Search, don't sort.
Use Google search to find the exact message you want, no matter when it was sent or received.
Don't throw anything away.
Over 2787.645625 megabytes (and counting) of free storage so you'll never need to delete another message.
Keep it all in context.
Each message is grouped with all its replies and displayed as a conversation.
No pop-up ads. No untargeted banners.
You see only relevant text ads and links to related web pages of interest

Gmail is Google's (the search engine) take on webmail. You get a whopping 2.8gb of space (and rising), access from your email program on your computer (if you want it) and lots more.
Sadly, accounts aren't given out for free, like Yahoo or Hotmail, you need an invitation from an existing user to get one.

Google's variant of Hotmail.
You need an invite by someone who already has an account before you can join. (gives it that air of illusitivity to all of the billion people that have it)
