The word '(to) palpitate' has two meanings :
1 If someone's heart palpitates, it beats very fast and irregularly because they are frightened or anxious. Example - Her heart began to palpitate when she heard the news.
2 If something palpitates, it trembles or moves quickly backwards and forwards, or seems to move in this way. Example - In the crowded courtroom, the silence palpitated with the frustration of people powerless to do anything.

Deep breathing often stops palpitations of the heart, just as palpitations of the heart often stop deep breathing. Or, more humorously: If your hand palpitates, make it stiff as a board; if you're stiff as a board, make your hand palpitate.
