I disagree in theory. Somebody once thought nothing new could possibly be invented, this was like in the early 1900s I believe. Yet, look at all of the new ideas we have been able to come up with and put into use since then. I think the same may be true with art. Just because your own mind can't think of anything new, doesn't mean it's all been done.

Yes, you're correct that you're wrong, otherwise there would be no 'art' to talk about because artists would still be scratching images of horses and stick figures onto cave walls. There were religious images before Michelangelo, but who could say that the Sistine chapel ceiling he painted was not original? Of course some artists are more original than others, and we all have to start from what is out there already; it is our responsibility to become familiar with what already exists because what's the value of saying something that's already been said? (actually, sometimes a point is worth repeating, but not necessarily in the same way). I believe that originality is not something to be aimed for in itself, but also that un-originality is to be avoided at all costs. That make sense?

Their can be changes to older things, or old ideas can be done better. Look at movie remakes, King Kong, Scrooge, Psycho. They are the same movies but updated with new effects. Not everything has been done, but everybody borrows something from previous works. So yes I think new art can come from borrowing things, or styles from the past and using them in slightly different ways.

You're wrong. This has been a belief since humanity started creating things. Back when the steam engine was invented there was a wide-spread belief that we had reached the pinnacle of existance and nothing else could be discovered or created.

True art comes from the artists soul and therefore can have been before the artist has created it...things may look similar be made of similar media but it remains unique and slightly different if it is true art.

That would be "there's nothing new".

And yes, you are wrong. I remember thinking the same as a teen aged person, now I am much older and have been amazed at things created by inspired minds.

this is the thought in everyone mind until something new comes up. don't be disappointed. we are not all meant to be creative and original. when something different comes up then art will extent a bit more and will make it more difficult for the next person to innovate. have faith in peoples boundaries. there are none...
