My rear defroster (02 Alero) is not working, and I want to see if the fuse or relay is the problem before I spend $15 on a new one, and I dont even know what the difference is

by definition, a relay is a device where a low amperage circuit controls a hi amperage circuit. a fuse is a device that opens when amps is exceeded, to stop electrical flow. it is not a multi-use device. 1 time, it's done. the nice thing about gm, is that most relays are the same. that is, to test one, you can usually take the 1 alongside and swap them, to see if it will work. the symbol for rear window defrost is a rectangle with several squiggly lines going thru it. kinda looks like snakes.

A relay is basically like a light switch that turns off and on, but automatically triggered. A fuse protects the electrics (stereo etc) if too much electricity is present by burning out. On your fuse panel cover, there should be a diagram telling you what fuse is for the defroster, pull it, see if it looks broken. Still confused, go to an auto parts store, they will help you. You can buy a simple cheap fuse tester to check the fuse to make sure it's good. If all the fuse looks good, get a relay. Best of luck.

The high speed relay connects 12 volts directly to the fan windings. The low speed relay connects 12 Volts to the fan windings, through a resistor. The resistor drops the voltage below 12 volts to slow the fan down. The two relays are or should be the same. Swap them and see if it changes anything. If the low speed relay is bad then swapping the relays should reverse the problem and cause the low speed to work and the high speed to quit working. If the problem stays the same then the resistor is the problem.

A relay is a switch; it is not usually meant to open under fault conditions (high current), and would likely fail if done so. A fuse is a fault protection device. If a short circuit develops, large currents will flow, and the fuse link will melt, causing the circuit to open.

There are also protective relays, which are devices that sense fault, or other undesireable conditions, and are used to send trip commands to breakers.

a relay opens and closes a circuit upon demand. a fuse is a bi-metal strip that will openor ( blow) once its amp capacity is exceeded.
