First answer, go to Control Panel, Add Remove Programs, hopefully the codex is listed and can be uninstalled. If not, then hopefully you have System Restore in XP still turned on. You can choose a previous snap shot of your computer before you downloaded the codex. How to do it, go to Help on your Windows Task bar, type in System Restore, and it will let you run it from there. Hopefully this will clear up all the junk. Part two, after the restore, download a reputable codex pack from: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Codec_Pack_All_in_1.htm I have never had problems with it to date. Best of luck.

the internet security suite may not have the ability to remove adware/spyware....just detect that its there. you'll need to get something like spybot search and destroy or adaware and make sure to update and scan regularly.
you could try to get rid of the codec by searching for it but you'd need to know what the name is or what date it was added to your pc. Depending on what program the codec installed to, you may need to do a complete uninstall/reinstall of that program....of course if it is Windows mediaplayer, you can't really do a complete uninstall but you can install either an earlier version or the latest and it will overwrite the existing files but I don't think it'll overwrite codecs.

There is a rash of fake codec software going around that is really spyware in disguise. They go by many names: TrueCodec, QualityCodec, PowerCodec, etc. They are fake - and you are correct in assuming that this software has slowed down your PC.
You can remove the spyware by using a program called SmitFraudFix. Complete instructions can be found at the site in the sources section below.

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html

Right click on My Computer.
Goto Properties.
Goto Hardware tab
Click on Device Manager,
Check that if any codec in audio and video category with an ! mark in an yellow circle. if it exists the just remove that by selecting it and pressing delete.
If there's no ! mark jus t find out which codec you've installed and delete that. or else you 've to re-format your system.

Goto Add Remove Programs from Control Panel and uninstall the codecs.
If you want teh codecs again to play audio and video files, then install "K-Lite Mega Codec Pack" from "http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm".
