I was a journalist. A car wreck put me in the hospital for a few years. I regained my health and have been freelancing but seems like full time gigs are few and far between. Any suggestions? I know its "just keep knocking on the doors". But anything else I can do?

Post your resume on http://www.monster.com especially if you're willing to relocate. Have you tried to go back to your former employer? You may have to start at entry level, keep doing freelance but get a copy-editing gig or some small beat or features writing at a small-market paper.
