"Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex."
Proposed Equal rights amendment, defeated in 1980. That's it, that's all, that's what all the fighting was about.
Silly isn't it that a nation comprised of 51% of women would defeat such an amendment?
Peace.

Before the law and after the law I think women have many advantages over men. First I have witnessed domestic dispute cases where the woman attacked her husband in full force drawing blood but he went to jail cause he scratched her while trying to restrain her. Secondly I've seen a friend lose his custody battle to his ex although she was smoking meth and didn't have a job. Thirdly I have seen on more than one occassion a man get fired for sexual harassment but women use the same language and even go further for promotion and privileges and nobody ever says a word. When it comes down to men getting paid 2% higher for performing the same job is a false statistic because although they may carry the same title job responsibilities differ from company to company and law of numbers suggest more men are carrying more of the positions w/ extra responsibility and therefore are probably getting paid Slightly more in general for the same Position title... not job. Second law of numbers is the reason for more men in management and executive positions because if you see more men than women chances are your going to find the best candidate is a man. And third through experience I have been denied an office job more than once because ALL not some, not a majority but ALL positions were taken by women so don't act likel discrimination is always geared towards women.

Still a long way to go, especially in certain countries where even talking about women's right will get you into trouble. The most effective way to combat inequality is by having a leadership who are commited towards the cause.
I'm lucky to live in a country where the past and present prime ministers are staunh feminists males, and whose daughters openly and dare i say, bitchily speaks out againsts discrimination of any kind, they are are perfect role models for younger ladies. But alas, the general will. People don't get it. These statesman will be saying one thing and for sure it will be misconstrued as an entirely diff thing and for them to be openly feminists is a great risk too, some quarters may stop voting for them so....the point is getting the message across to an ignorant population, the agreed upon principles can be deconstructed now and then but it takes political will and education of the masses.
In the case of my country, the politicians are doing a wonderful job but maybe it's the implementation, and mysogynists here and there who comes along to screw it up.

It doesn't exist, either in practice OR in principle. In spite of the fact that laws against discrimination exist, a woman still gets paid 70-80 cents on the dollar for doing the same job as a man. Only 2% of executives are women...a figure that simply can NOT be explained away by the higher percentage of women who stay home with children.
Education is worse for women, women have fewer choices for careers, and when they do break through barriers, they're treated worse and paid less.

Women seem to have more than equal rights. They seem to have some advantages. A wife can commit many crimes against her husband and get away with it, but it seems that men are not able to. So sometimes it seems to be unequal rights. Not only that, but a man has to pay child support.
