hi everyone. I'm having troubles w/ my Sony Vaio S150. It was overheating and I opened it and took out the heatsink to clean up the dust. It also seemed to have problem w/ the hard disk that I had to tilt the laptop to a certain angle to keep the windows running and if I lay it flat on desk it freezed. So I have also replaced the hard disk.
The problem I've been having before & after I replaced the hard disk is that I HAVE TO KEEP TURNING THE LAPTOP ON AND OFF MULTIPLE TIMES (sometimes more than 30 times) JUST TO BOOT INTO WINDOWS. I powers up but screen shows nothing and the fan is very quiet. No beeps or anything. Turn it off and turn it on again and repeat....... Very annoying....
What could be the cause of this and how can I narrow down the possibilities? Could it be the heatsink that I took out and put back causing it not sitting tight and flat on the CPU? Please tell me that it's not the expensive motherboard...
THANK YOU ALL IN ADVANCE !!

The problem now turns uglier that it doesn't want to boot and I have to leave it on.
Okay here's what I got now
1. the hard disk light is not lit at all time when it doesn't boot. I don't hear any beep so I hope I can elminate having bad RAM.
2. I'm guessing the problem is caused by HEATSINK because it seems like I can't really fully tighten the screws and even worse is ... I messed them up already. ~_~#
3. What does heatsink do and do I need to put something onto it so it can stick to the CPU b/c I believe it was originally stuck to the CPU by some sort of glue.

AGAIN. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR ANSWERS AND TIME. I appreciate that very much!!

P.S. Yes I know I should probably go buy a new one........iff I can poop cash out of my butt for that. ^_^ I'm very broke...

using a anti static wrist clamp or similiar device open the back and lift and connect all your connectors. You said you already cleaned the heatsink was it like really fouled up with trash? If not check the fan assemble. When you put heatsink back on did you use a heat paste to make the connection of the processor chip and heat sink more able to conduct the heat off of chip? Video card is probably built into the motherboard but one last item you might check and thats the ram chips. Lift them out reseat them and see if that was an issue or not.

So basically you seem to have eliminated the HD,no beeps could point to the cmos battery being flat, also when it tries to boot is there a HD activity led if so and it stays lit all of the time, then the cpu maybe fried, overheating may have caused the ram to creep slightly from the slot/s, reseat them, while you are in there you may want to look at the MB to see if there is any swollen capacitors/discoloration,scorch marks, also burn/scorch marks on the cpu core would indicate a fried cpu, you could even have a faulty power supply/battery, plenty of things to look at,look for the obvious first.
