Its a stupid question but please answer cos one of my friends wants to know the answer.

Edit the question. If you cannot explain yourself, I would lean towards the fact that you will not succeed until you can explain (and understand) yourself enough to know in what area you want to succeed. Lose the self consciousness and the reliance on what your friend thinks.
Success is just how much you feel you are succeeding. Some people are millionaires, married for 20 years to someone they love with 3 kids, a dog, 3 houses (in different countries), a personal jet, a maid, a personal assistant, etc.... and they still do not feel successful. Come up with what you feel makes you successful (reasonable goals to attain within a year) and then follow it with a passion. You will succeed!
Again...The goal to success is KNOWING that you are succeeding.
