Ferguson got knighted for two reasons: in Bob Paisley's time football was seen as the game of the working class, and working class people did not get knighthoods; John Major and Tony Blair, in their attempt to keep the Honours System appearing relevant, have given honours to "popular" people, irrespective of their achievements. Also there is an institutional bias in favour of Manchester United (why was Matt Busby knighted and not Bill Shankly or Brian Clough)?
As for silverware, Ferguson has won more (8 League titles, 5 FA Cups, 3 League Cups, 1 European Cup (Champions League), 1 European Cup Winners Cup and 1 European Super Cup) with Manchester United, while Paisley won 6 League titles, 3 European Cups, 1 UEFA Cup, 3 League Cups and 1 European Super Cup. However, it should be remembered that Ferguson has taken 20 years to win 19 trophies, whilst Paisley won 14 trophies in eight years - a much higher success rate.

So annoying to respond to. some years in the past i might have mentioned Bob Paisley. I grew up watching his communities dominating kinfolk and ecu soccer and at their ultimate, they have been purely approximately unbeatable. inspite of the undeniable fact that, Ferguson has gained the lot at guy Utd and just about ruled the English pastime because of the fact the early ninety's. i will ought to sit down down on the fence and positioned them as equals. inspite of the undeniable fact that, the only element that has consistently wound me up is that Bob Paisley became by no ability knighted. this is a shame and that i think of followers of maximum golf equipment might agree...

Because Ferguson gave a load of cash to New Labour and mixed with the right people.
And Blair likes to suck up to his idea of success.
Makes you SICK, doesn't it?
Especially considering Paisley's THREE European Cups to Ferguson's one.
And the fact that Paisley was a gentleman.

Because the Queen gives out knighthoods more nowadays in this 21st century than in the past, so as to be seen as keeping up with the times. Pah.
David Beckham for a knighthood? Rubbish!

I think it's just a sign of changing times. In days gone by outstanding sportsmen and women would receive honours (MBE etc.). Now MBEs are given out to entire teams of players if they perform well in a tournament.
The bar has been lowered and Ferguson, with such a lauded footballing CV, is now deemed worthy of one of the top honours.
