In 1641, the Dutch governor of Manhattan offered the first scalp bounty; a
common practice in many European countries. This was broadened by the
Puritans to include a bounty for Natives fit to be sold for slavery. The
Dutch and Puritans joined forces to exterminate all Natives from New
England, and village after village fell. Following an especially successful raid against the Pequot in what is now Stamford, Connecticut, the churches of
Manhattan announced a day of "thanksgiving" to celebrate victory over the
heathen savages. This was the 2nd Thanksgiving. During the feasting, the
hacked off heads of Natives were kicked through the streets of Manhattan
like soccer balls.

The killing took on a frenzy, with days of thanksgiving being held after
each successful massacre. Even the friendly Wampanoag did not escape.
Their chief was beheaded, and his head placed on a pole in Plymouth,
Massachusetts

8:00 pm east coast, history channel. Maybe some people can learn a bit of truth about this holiday. Native Americans have gotten the crappy end of the stick more than any other race of people in America. If more people really knew their history, not the crap they teach about feel good history, they wouldn't write the kind of responses I have read. I guess it applies to all forums on here. Some people wouldn't believe the truth even if it was smacking them in the face. Demonize it, then kill it or pass a law to control it. Worked then, works now.

Thanks for the link. I will take more time to read it all. I like to fanticize sometimes what it would have been like if Texas had remained a republic. But, it could never be. If not Mexico, then one of the European powers would have sent over an army big enough to take the state away from the Texans. Same thing would have happened, IMHO, to the Cheyenne and the Commanche if they could have procurred enough warriors with repeating rifles. Somebody else would be invading their nations. I'm glad we have Americans with all the different backgrounds. It is where we are today that is important.

I am sure there is some truth to your story, but it aint like it wasn't happening before the white people came. If this was really all true, the indians would all be dead by now. The reasons the indians were defeated in nearly every case was that before the white man arrived, all they did was fight each other. If they would have put up a united front, the white man would have never had the power to defeat them. They treated each other like savages. In the Carribean, where I live, the carib indians used to go to other islands and steal the wives and daughters of the peacfull tribes and kill and eat the men. They wiped out the population of many islands doing this. Is this better than what you are saying. I doubt that it is as bad as you are saying. You have made some of it up, but there is truth to it. The same thing was going on in europe with wars and fighting. The strong always won, which they did in this continent. Some of your indian ancestors became scouts and scouted out indians to kill.

And as recently as 1900, the state of California (which was re-imbursed by the federal government) paid people $30 each for "Indian" scalps. How barbaric, just over a hundred years ago.

Being British I know nothing about Thanksgiving other than its something to do with Americans eating Turkey.

But this story sounds like crap I have to say.

Thank You for stating the truth about a ridiculous holiday. Bush should Pardon a soldier from going to Iraq, instead of a turkey going to the table.

Thank you for sharing, now as I set down to turkey and the trimmings and I let out a blood curdling war whoop, I will have an explanation to my family. Happy thanksgiving huh.

Edit: So do you have an explanation to why I enjoy pumpkin pie?
