I owned a 1997 pontiac GTP. There are lots of reasons the check engine light might light up. Go to Auto Zone- Advanced Auto get the code read listen to there defination and report back to us Yamster Mechanics. Write down the code " example P0420"and also ask them to see the freeze frame data rite that down too. Freeze Data is stored the exact moment the code is set.

Check engine lights come on when the PCM sees something that`s out of range , like a sensor thats reading a open circuit ,a way rich or lean condition, a engine miss.just a few of the many things that will turn it on.and yes even a loose gas cap . have it scanned to know for sure.

if your car seems to run ok or no different then its probably a evap or emission control problem... you can spend a little cash and buy a code reader from a car shop... The cost of the reader is usually cheaper then having it serviced... the reader will tell you which sensor is malfunctioning... buy a new sensor and replace it yourself... you will save a lot of cash and get a code reader, not to mention the pride in fixing it yourself ...
I did it the reader cost me 90 bucks and the O2 sensor I had to replace was 100...
The dealer wanted 100.00 to hook it up and 90.00per hour labor, plus parts...
Sometimes the sensor is ok and it just needs a reset, the reader will allow you to reset or buy one that will allow you to...

Depending on the mileage of the car some are set up to come on at about 50K or 75K. This is set by the factory and really doesn't mean anything. If all gauges are reading ok and your mileage is in the high range you probably don't have to worry. If however you have a fairly low mileage car I would take it to the dealer to get it checked out.

If it stays on its an emission issue. Try replacing the gas cap. If the light flashes off and on get to a mechanic NOW.

OK FIRST THING IS FIRST- THE GUY THAT SAYS IT IS SET TO COME ON BY THE FACTORY IS A MORON. Go and get it scanned by a mechanic or the dealer, autozone doesn't know anything except for how to sell hubcaps and car wax.

You may need to get that checked out by the mechanic as soon as possible. Not doing so can adversely affect your car's gas mileage.
