UML is a standard for expressing software design. It's a set of diagram types that describe the use, flow, and component design of a system.

You may be asking why on Earth there needs to be a standard for something as simple as diagrams. Well, since they're a standard, anyone that understands UML diagrams should be able to understand the contents of any particular UML diagram, no matter who drew it. The symbols have a particular set of meanings, as set by the UML standard.

Unified Modelling Language (UML) is an Object Management Group (OMG) standard for modelling software artifacts. Using UML, developers and architects can make a blueprint of a project, much like ERD diagrams are used for relational design.
