As far as quality of life goes, I have to say that to be an average person in a rich, well developed country, has to be the best option. The idea of being rich in a poor country sounds good; to have the resources to own the sort of home you'd like, not having to worry about paying bills and the general security that having money brings - all very appealing. On the downside, however, the things that are taken for granted in a well developed country and which contribute greatly to our quality of life, comfort, and peace of mind, aren't usually available in a poor country. For example: ready availability of consumer items, constant supply of electricity and water, well-made roads, trained healthcare workers whever you live, public libraries, plus the arts, etc., - you don't miss them, 'til they're not there! In addition, if you're rich in a poor country and surrounded by poor people, you're not going to have many real friends. People will either envy you, because they want what you have and this could lead to crimes against yourself or your property, or they'll pose as friends in the hope that they'll benefit from that friendship in some financial way. I think there can be many personal benefits in living in a poor country (slower pace of life, less competitive environment and learning to take pleasure in the simple life) but not as a rich person.

Quality of life has little to do with the economic climate of a country.
The UK is generally a very rich country, that doesn't stop it being an over-developed sh!t-hole though...........
i would rather live in a country where the culture encourages more of a community spirit. The Uk and USA governments use fear to keep th epopulace spending and bolster our over-inflated economies.
That said, I wouldn't like to live in some third-world armpit country where healthcare etc is scarce.

I think the best solution is six months in each.
My ideal situation would be to live six months in New York, there I always feel poor, because every thing costs so much money , but there is excitement around and many things like excellent Art shows are free .
Then , I would live in poor country where your money goes a long where. But you need to select that country well, because poverty breeds often crime. Please , I'm not saying the poor people are criminals

From my experience in a poorer country. They call the well developed countries civilised but just look what happened after Katrina. There was robbing and stealing and everybody was angry and upset. The richest country in the world did not help its own people.
A poorer country like Thailand was hit by the Tsunami and the whole country rallied round to give help. Everybody donated stuff or gave actual help. Foreigners there are full of praise for Thais.
Which country would you rather live in?

Materially you would be much better off as a rich person in a poor country.
Labour will be cheap, so you would be able to employ people to do all the chores for you, while knowing that you would actually do them a favour by giving them the opportunity to earn at least some money.
Whether that's good for the soul I would doubt, but that's the way it is.

Anywhere but here (personally). An average guy in America is rich compared to the rest of the world by the way.
