Some are Private (Stanford), some are owned by their respective states (UC Berkley). The private ones have many catagories, including religious and single-sex institutions.

Just about every ownership imaginable.

Some are owned by the Federal Government - The Military Academies as main examples.

Many are owned by the individual states - although name alone does not tell, most will be "University of ______ (name of state)", or "_____________ State University (or College)".

Many are owned by religious groups - no way to tell from the name, but those starting with "Saint" have a good chance of having a religious affiliation.

Some are privately owned, for profit.

Some are owned by a trust of some type.

I'm sure there are other forms of ownership out there, too.

some are owned by the state, some are church owned. Several Catholic colleges and universities, particularly those run by religious orders of priests (for instance, the Jesuits) formerly employed the term "rector" to refer to the school's chief officer. In many cases, he was also the head of the community of priests assigned to the school, and so the two posts -- head of the university and local superior of the priests -- were merged in his person ). This practice is no longer followed as the details of the governance of most of these schools has changed.
