The old adage: A picture is worth a thousand words.

tele - to transport or move or relay, etc
vision - what one uses to see pictures
If someone says, "It's such a beautiful vista," are they talking about a beach scene or desert scene or mountain scene? Now, put that person on TV in some setting with the background in the camera shot and you know what they're referring to without them having to more fully describe it. So, at least in one aspect, it has made the relaying of information more efficient.
