I'm only going to take the example of constructive and caring criticism in an attempt to view our own craziness regarding critics:
If the ego has a problem sometimes accepting our own faults, all the more reason to have a problem with other people pointing at them.
Also the fact that ALL mortals care about what people think about them...yes, in different levels but I would dare to say that even in the smallest degree, EVERYBODY cares about what other people think of them. One example: Have you noticed that even in the case in which a person is as free and careless as you can be, they make sure people know they don't care about their opinion? That's caring about what people think!!...(and "they should think and know that I don't care about them").
And finally, the fact that even if it comes from the best intentions and love, we may feel it in some way as invasive; we think that people don't notice our faults as much as we do, we know our selves better than anybody right?
So when they tell us our faults is a proof that they know us too, sometimes even better than ourselves because their opinions don't come loaded with defensive mechanisms, is just observation.
I personally like constructive criticism, is an opportunity to grow and learn if we allow it to be....

Lose of face, pride. We do not want to hear what's WRONG with us, failing to realise that constructive criticisms (if taken positively) make us change for a better person.

Maybe because some people's parents told them everything they did was great!
Instead of just positive coaching on how to do better.
(if important)

very good question!
yes we all get pretty upset when we are criticised
many marriages break up because of it.
It would be great if we could just accept it especially if it was needed
It would be our pride I would say having someone else say we are not perfect so to speak

Because, despite what most people claim, we do care what other people think
