If 5 systems are connected on a lan easily share resources with each other. configured to get an IP address automatically 4 in Win XP and 1 in win 2003 server. Why is the server system not available with other systems on the network neihbourhood.?

sounds like a domain problem mate.

IF the xp machines are connect via a work group i don't think 2003 server will recognise them as it will require a domain setup.

try searching for information on setting up a domain and that should help you out

Each PC should authenticate with the server. Are you running Active directory? Have you configured DNS or WinS.
