we have got a mamas and pappas pram with retention straps inside it to stop baby from moving around.is there a law regarding this for short journeys of less than 20 minutes allowing us to use this for transporting a baby.obviousely i would use seatbelts and blankets inside the cot as well(to allay any fears of mistreatment).

Use a car seat, you don't have to be driving for hours to have an accident, it could happen at the top of your road. Never compromise your babies safety.

There ARE carrycots which can double as the top of a pram and are also tested for use as a car seat, but I'm not sure if Mamas and Papas make them, or if your model is the right one to do this. The instruction book with your pram should make it clear whether it has been tested to the appropriate British or European standard - or you could check the Mamas and Papas website (link below).

If it says it has been tested for use in this way, by all means use it. If not, you will probably be breaking the law and certainly taking unnecessary risks with your baby's safety.

Update: have looked around and can't see any M&P units that have this dual functionality - most seem to be by a company called Bebeconfort. Babyworld (see link below) says the following, which would make me think twice about using one anyway:

Carrycot with fixing kit
Newborn baby to 10kg
This is a pram carrycot which has an integral harness designed to restrain the baby in the car. It is sold with a special fixing kit to secure it on the back seat of the car.

Useful for very young babies as they can lie flat in the car and remain undisturbed as the carrycot is lifted from the car to pram chassis or indoors
The carrycot is anchored by adult seat belts from both sides and takes up a lot of space on the back seat, which is a problem when there are other passengers. You will also still need a car seat quite quickly as the carrycot is not suitable for use in the car once the baby is beginning to sit up (from around six months)
Most experts agree that, while these carrycots comply with current safety standards, they do not offer the same level of protection as a rear-facing infant carrier

It's not really a question of whether you can use it legally but whether you would be able to forgive yourself if an accident occured and the baby was hurt.

The car seat you have fitted already is made for a reason and although it may take a few minutes to put the baby in securely it is the only safe way to travel.

Even if you are only travelling for 20 minutes an accident can happen in seconds. My wife had an accident only 200 yards from our front door but the baby was securely fastened in his seat and was completely unharmed. I dread to think what may have happened if the baby was only loosly fitted in his cot, surrounded by a basic harness and some blankets.

For the sake of a few minutes work you could be literally saving their life if the worst happened.

Simple answer is that no journey, however short, is worth the risk. Use the correct seat.

no, the laws have changed recently, a baby has to be properly restrained in a proper car seat suitable for the baby's age/weight. but the law also says if it is absolutely necessary and unavoidable the child can go in a car with out a car seat

NO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it obviously wasn't designed to be used as a car seat, and no matter how many blankets or straps u use, it's never going to be as safe as it should be !!! i know proper car seats are expensive, but u can't put a price on the health and safety of your child. i have a young son, and even though we only have 1 wage coming into the house, we made sure that we had a proper car seat that's suitable for his weight and height, and that conforms to modern safety laws. even a second hand one has to be safer that using something that was never designed to be a car seat. if the worse scenario happened, and u had an accident whilst your child wasn't in a proper car seat, u wouldn't be able to forgive yourself if anything bad happened due to lack of proper protection, would you ? pleeeeeeeeeease, get a proper seat !!!

Hauling an infant automobile seat style service up and down 2 flights can be a royal soreness interior the neck - those issues are heavy! for sure a stroller can no longer paintings both. Get an outstanding infant sling or service and positioned on your infant - that's lots a lot less weight to carry round, it will leave your palms loose for diaper bag, groceries, and so on. and your infant will be happier too. in reality your options are: carry infant in a heavy seat each of ways up the steps, carry infant on your palms, or positioned on infant in a service. i comprehend you suggested you "are literally not partial to the distributors the position you strap the newborn on your the front or again" yet i do not get why - possibly you've purely been uncovered to the undesirable ones? There are some low-cost, poorly designed distributors accessible that are basically extra worry than they're worth - that's too tricky to get infant out and in or they don't look to be tender for the fellow. There are also some magnificent ones. My favorites are a hoop sling (for newborns) and a mei tai service (for older children). I made mine myself yet you'll locate them on line to boot. I also comprehend lots of those who LOVE the Ergo.

Hi, I used to work at Mamas and Papas, but quite a while ago now and yes u could use the top part of the pram for the car but there was a strap that came with the pram to support it securely in the car.
I would call the nearest store to u and ask for advice just to be on the safe side...x
