It has long been claimed that humans share 98.5% of their DNA with chimpanzees, though that estimate has more recently been reduced to about 95%.

http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn2833

Yet in a story today, scientists claim that 12% of the human genme can vary from one person to another.

So if one human is 95% similar to a chimp, yet only 88% similar to another human, are they more ape than man?

And if so, could they be Robbie Williams?

A very large amount of our DNA (whatever the actual figure) is shared with chimps, but it's the parts of DNA that we share that's important. Nearly all our DNA is called "junk DNA" - it doesn't function at all. Dunno about us differing in human genome by 12% - seems a bit far fetched to me or maybe they were only referring to non junk DNA? Anyway I do know that we share 50% of our DNA with bananas and that doesn't make us a banana!!! It's only a small part of our DNA that makes us who we are.

it's far too easy for an average person to take esoteric scientific info and derive all sorts of ideas about life. learn to accept the differences in people and you'll be farther ahead than most.
