If you have the time and are able to breast feed until they are 12 months old or a bit older it does wonders. Putting a child on formula dn then cows milk just upsets their stomic. Less change is better. but its up to you can you take the baby getting teeth and biting. but longer is better.

No cow's milk until 1 year of age. Formula you can start at any point, however, be aware that if you have a breastfed baby and you just stop doing breastmilk and go straight to formula, your baby is going to be very unhappy. If you can continue to breastfeed, do that. Not only is it good for the baby and bonding with you, but it's also WAAAAAY cheaper than formula is. Before you start your baby on formula, ask a pediatrician if they have any samples that you can try. That way you aren't going out and spending a bunch of money on formula that your baby won't eat anyway. If you want to stop breastfeeding, start by expressing breastmilk and mixing about an ounce of formula into it (I mean preparing the formula, then mixing that with the breastmilk, not just putting the powdered formula into the breastmilk). Gradually increase the amount of formula while decreasing the breastmilk, that should make transition easier. I would recommend breastfeeding your child for as long as possible becuase it was a preemie, but if it's too much for you, don't feel bad. I've had lots of times that I've just wanted to stop breastfeeding because I had no idea how exhausting and stressful it could be (I'm a working mom who pumps about 12oz a day and the kid eats way more than that, but I've got enough when he's with me, just can't pump much anymore). Your breastmilk will help to boost up your baby's immune system, and since your baby was a preemie, your baby will need a little extra boost. But formula is completely alright and safe for babies. If it wasn't, they wouldn't sell it.

Hi Mrs Arun,
Stopping breastfeeding will not make your baby malnourished, please don't listen to that rubbish. There is no right or wrong time to start formula.
My daughter was born at 23.2 weeks, 450 grams. I could only express breast milk for her for about 3 months until my supply dried up. The hospital then gave her formula until she came home at 5 months old. I started cow's milk at around 12 months corrected age mixed with formula. Just formula up until that point. My daughter is very healthy, and gaining weight. Gaining weight though is a struggle with any prem no matter how they are fed. It's a personal preference though when to start. Good Luck. Kath

hey mrs arun,
I'm a student at a nursing college and we have been taught that a mother shud not stop breast feeding till the child is 2 yrs old, but after 6 months of age, u can start the weaning process which means that u shud start giving ur child soups, dals, juices, soft foods, like banana and khichidi etc, so that the child can develop a taste for such things but only after 6 months of age but stopping breast-feed would deprive your child of all the nutrients that only a mother's milk can give. so it is medically recommended to keep breast-feeding till the child is at least 2 yr old. cerelac or any formula can be started along side but do not stop breast feeding that wud result in ur baby being malnourished.
all the luck!!!!

I would wait on the whole cow's milk and formula. They are really irrate a premmie's belly and create havic to you. I would try to keep with breastfeeding or at least give your baby expressed milk by pumping, even when giving them solid foods. Breastmilk will ALWAYS have the most nutrition for your baby.

For all babies but especially for a preemie, the mother should breastfeed exclusively for the first 6mths and then at least until 12mths, longer if she is willing! If she stops before 12mths of age, formula must be given.

All babies should be breastfed for at least 12 months, per the American Academy of Pediatrics. The WHO and UNICEF recommend nursing for at least 2 years.
