architecture
Bombay is energetic, exuberant, sparkling, and has building stones of many kinds and colours ... on your dyspeptic days you are apt to find ... Bombay's [architecture] bumptious, even riotous. In your more genial moments you might apply the adjective ... 'vital'.
Mumbai's architectural heritage from the British Raj is the icon of this vibrant city of gold. Less well known are the small places of religion tucked away inside crowded bazars, or the forgotten mansions of the once rich.Many Indo-Gothic monuments also line South Mumbai. Victoria Terminus; BMC building, Gateway of India are some examples of this style The Marine Drive,is home to some of the finest buildings of the art deco style, which flourished in the 1920s and 1930s.

Mumbai has been shaped by many remarkable feats of civil engineering. Some of these are extremely visible even today.

ethnic composition
Hindus = 68%
Muslims = 17%
Christians = 4%
Buddhist = 4%
Parsis + Jains + Sikhs + Jews + rest = 7%

and lifestyle
culture
Mumbai is famous for its Bindaas (carefree) attitude. It is the most cosmopolitan city of India. Bombay is a melting pot of various cultures and is in fact a microcosm of India. Average resident of Mumbai, known as Mumbaikar or Bombayite, leads a fast-paced life and has very little time for other activities owing to a significant amount of time spent on daily commuting. Local railway network-established by the Britishers-is the lifeline of Mumbai and the preferred mode of transportation of most of the Mumbaikars. Local bus service run by BEST is also very popular. Taxis and autos are also quite efficient and run at reasonable rates.
Mumbai or Bombay has always been a multicultural and multi ethnic society. Its culture is a potpourri of Maharashtrian, Gujarati, Parsi and Islamic elements. Whether it is the Siddhi Vinayak Temple or the Parsi Tower of Silence or Haji Ali, all of them co-exist in this metropolis. Though in the recent past, the Shiv Sena has tried to give Mumbai a very Marathi identity, most still consider this the land of opportunity, particularly to be immortalized on celluloid.Choc-a-bloc with avenues of entertainment, from a stroll down Marine Drive to the chaos of Chowpatty, from shopping at Colaba Causeway and Linking Road to sipping coffee at the Apollo Bar at the Taj Mahal Hotel or having a cup of tea at the Irani tea stalls, Mumbai is as diverse as you can get. From the bungalows of Pali Hill to the chawls of Dharavi, the rich and the not so rich live together in this city not wrongly known as mini India.

the festivals they have / what people do in the festivals.
Since Mumbai is a cosmopolitan metropolis all religious festivals such as Diwali(festival of lights - you clean n decorate you house with diyas - li'l mud lamps, you exchange sweets, light tonns of crackers, perform a pooja in the evening etc), Holi (festival of colours - you put colours on everyone and have like a smashing tea + bhajiya party :P )), Christmas (im sure you know wat this is), Id & Moharram (you exhange sweets, visit family n friends etc) and Ganesha Chaturthi (you bring home ganesh idols which will either be immersed after x days - x being anyone of these - 1, 1 1/2, 3, 5, 7, 10 days - in the recent times this festival has become more of a community festivals where huuuuuuuuge idol measuring upto 15 feet are bought in a community and then immersed with a lot of fan fare) are celebrated with great enthusiasm. The festival lasts for upto 10 days and culminates with the immersion of idols of Lord Ganesha in the sea.)

In Mumbai 4 festivals are celebrated with full fun, joy and enthusiasm. A person whatever debt he has, whatever tensions he has forgets everything and celebrates it. These are: Holi, Ganeshotsav, Janmastami and Diwali.
