as the man said he was bored, Ian Thorpe said he looked up out of the water and he liked what he seen, so he climbed out, remember he is multi rich now, has fame,, broke world records, so my question to you would be, why do you think he would want to continue to get up at 4:30 each morning and swim laps looking down at a black line

Actually, 24 is not that young in swimming...
Also, he missed a whole yer of training, and it's very hard to get back to the swimmer's life after such a break.
And probably, as he said, it also contributed that he has many more possibilities in life.

burnout I would say
he has been swimming for hours a day since a little boy
he got sick & couldn't swim & he was able to experience the real world where he could stay up late & go out with friends even sleep in on a weekend
the poor guy has missed so much in the real world
so do a lot of sports people who start so young

He wanted to enjoy swimming competitively and he started to feel like it was a chore and felt that swimming and not winning would let his fans down.

he achieved all his goals and to achieve more he'd be breaking his own records.that didn't sound desirable to him.he'd rather give it his all than do it just because he can
