Anyone who used internet to search something would have come across wikipedia. I heard that going to be sold and there will be a subscription for it.

I doubt it. Wikipedia is GPL'ed meaning if it was sold, someone could "fork it" - that is copy the contents, and then offer it under the same terms currently available- meaning free.

In short, Wikipedia is run by the WikiMedia Foundation, a non profit group based in Florida. It seems highly unlikely that anyone would have to pay anything nor that Wikipedia's access structure would change.

Oh, and the board of the foundation wouldn't allow it to go commercial.

Donations to the WMF are a good thing though. Lots of servers (and I mean lots) and lots of bandwidth is rather expensive.

I concur with colorado; not only could it [being copied] happen, it WOULD happen. Plus, since anybody can edit it, and often times it's tampered with, no one would want to pay for it, considering that competitors exist, which people would easily flock to.

If it IS for sale, I wouldn't be surprised if Google bought it. They own almost everything else online, this would be the next logical step.

Just curious, where did you hear this?
