Under the age of 25 years, invasive cancer is extremely rare, but changes in the cervix are common. Any woman under 25 who is concerned about her risk of developing cervical cancer or her sexual health generally, should contact her GP or Genito-Urinary Medicine (GUM) clinic.

Women under 25 are not invited to have a smear, so if you want one, either ask at your doctors or look on the NHS website for your nearest GUM clinic. Hope this helps :)

Make an appointment for a smear test to get you started. If you tell the receptionist what the appointment is for they will make sure a female member of staff will be performing the quick harmless procedure. Smear tests should be performed every 3 years, and they help detect the early signs of any abnormal cells in your reproductive area, which could be many things. Results are now sent straight out to you at your home address about 3 weeks after the smear is done. It will either state if the cells appear normal ( no abnormal cells detected) or if you require further testing. If you do require further testing the letter will state where you need to go, what date and time. If not the letter will remind you when your next test is due. Hope this helps.

hi, im 20 and just had my first smear postnatelly, i had a baby 9 weeks ago. my doctors told me that no woman usually gets screened now until they are 25, it used to be 21 now the age has gone up to 25. i had a smear done but the nurse told me the lab would maybe not check it as they dont see the need in doing a smear until 25. i thought this was stupid as girls are sexually active at a younger age.. i was worried and asked my gp and well woman clinic if they could screen me last year and they wouldnt

You only have to have a smear test if you have ever had sex and if you have then you should have a smear test every three years. You need to telephone your doctor and request on they will make the appointment and once it is done you will be sent a reminder every three years to have one.
You are being very sensible in thinking about having one as it is for your health and well being.
Just phone your surgery and they will book you in or you can go to a family planning clinic and they do them too.

National screening for cervical smears is recommended for women aged 25 onwards regardless of previous sexual activity. You could approach your GP or family planning nurse when you near that age.

I would think you could call your doctor or a clinic. But my suggestion is to do it as soon as you can. This is very important, I was just diagnosed with High risk Hpv (causes cervical cancer) they say its a very common virus, But my point is if you are sexually active then its even more important to go.I'm only 25 and I having to deal with this, A friend of mine told me she got it when she was 15. If you've never heard of it read up on it you can go to HPV.com. Please Please go get checked its better to start going when your young, that way they can catch anything that comes up. If you are sexually active let them know that way they can check for ANY std's

you can either go to your doctor, practise nurse, well women clinic, family planning clinic,or the sexual health clinic at your local hospital, normally the family planning and sexual health clinics are walk in clinics with no need for appointment, or you can just ring your doctor and ask the receptionist to book you in for a smear test.
good luck and please do not worry about having it done, it is painless and could save your life.

Ask your doctor. Either a doctor or a nurse can do it. Don't worry, it can be just a little uncomfortable but it only takes a few seconds. Please get one. You need to look after your health. When you've had the first one you should get a reminder when to have another. Good luck.
