It's a figure of speech.

Kids currently (and in the past) are taught that the Indians welcomed the Pilgrims with open arms and everyone got along great before and after the first Thanksgiving. History says that was not the case, so kids are being taught false information.

Young kids should learn about the process of being thankful before you acquaint them with the concept of conquest. Give them separate stories to give them a basis for comparison.

First off, that meal was not the first thanksgiving. Thanksgiving was declared a holiday 200 years later. The meal between the pilgrims and natives was not a yearly event..it happend once.

a watered down version of the actual events; there was some tension since the pilgrims came in and tried to take away the Indian's lands...but they got through the dinner and that's the most important part...it was only later that the bloodshed began (leave that part out for now)

The disney way is a way for kids to just be kids. Sometimes depending on age its best to not tell them the whole truth. You dont want them to not have the truth but you dont want to put in all the bad side of it. They should know the basics of thanksgiving and its a time for family love and to be thankfull of the things they have.

Imagine that?!!!!

Isn't education, especially when it comes to history, supposed to be based on facts??? There is too much historical revision going on lately. What amazes me especially, is that it's not just being done to things that happened a few hundred years ago or more (and therefore, isn't contested out of ignorance), but it's also being done with things that just happened a couple of years ago. It boggles my mind.

the pilgrims dressed in funny hats and shoes with buckles had a picnic dinner with the indians that wore leather clothes and feathers on their heads. they ate wild turkey and popcorn and drank whiskey. it was very fun. then they all played tag football afterwards.

that's the way i was taught and i don't know it any other way.

in case you havent realized it most american history is the happy version. little dark bits surface but we like to think of ourselves as a better lot than we really are. which speaking of thankgiving goes back to our super terrific pilgrim founders. we are pure because god wanted us to kill off everything in our path.
