The German Shepherd Dog or Alsatian, is a breed of dog. The German Shepherd Dog is a large, strong, handsome dog, looking a lot like a wolf. GSDs are highly intelligent, agile and well suited to active working environments. They are often deployed in varied roles such as police work, guarding, Search and Rescue and in the military. GSDs are also found working alongside the blind as guide dogs. Despite their suitability for such work, GSDs also make loyal and loving pets for home - enjoying living with families (including children) and other animals. GSDs are well suited to obedience, with advanced & prestigious titles available to test both handler and dog in various schutzhund trials-.

This now differs in years of thinking. There are now crossbreeds that they believe are HALF wolf. Still today.
Just like cats when you consider a Main Coon, domestic Bengals and even larger domestic cats that may stand more than 3 ft. tall. Beautiful distinctive markings and/or size than "normal" domestic cats.
Just my opinion, I can see Siberians/Husky /Alsatians being closer. No formative word has based my opinion - but to me it makes sense that they would look more familiar to the wolf, and then further bred than going into a totally different breed.

Probably the nothern breeds like the siberian huskey and the alaskan malamute, but more the husky. Coming from Siberia they were in isolation and still retain wolf-like characteristics especially in appearance.

Siberian husky and Alaskan malamute. Huskies not only look like wolves, some have quite a strong prey drive compared to most domestic dogs.
