Troy is a legendary city and center of the Trojan War, as described in the Epic Cycle, and especially in the Iliad, one of the two epic poems attributed to Homer.

Today it is the name of an archaeological site (39°57′26.8″N, 26°14′19.9″E), the traditional location of Homeric Troy, Turkish Truva, in Hisarlık in Anatolia, close to the seacoast in what is now Çanakkale province in northwest Turkey, southwest of the Dardanelles under Mount Ida.

A new city of Ilium was founded on the site in the reign of the Roman Emperor Augustus. It flourished until the establishment of Constantinople, and declined gradually during Byzantine times.

In the 1870s the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann excavated the area. Later excavations revealed several cities built in succession to each other. One of the earlier cities (Troy VII) is often identified with Homeric Troy. While such an identity is disputed, the site has been successfully identified with the city called Wilusa in Hittite texts; Ilion (which goes back to earlier Wilion with a digamma) is thought to be the Greek rendition of that name.

All we can know for certain is that there was an ancient city at the Bosphorus, which was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt.
So there has to be a core of truth in the story, but as history is always written by the winners, we do not know how much of it is true.
The characters are most probably fictional, probably every Greek town and city wanted to have a hero who fought in that famous war, and Homer took it from there.
The thing about Helena might well have been true, because even in historic times the land of the city state of Sparta belonged to the women, and the bronze age king probably had his legitimacy by marriage to the queen, in whose lineage the inheritance was given on, so Menalaos would have good reason to want his wife back, and to reconcile himself to her afterwards.

Like every story about history, in the past some parts were added to put it more interesting and to seem god-favored, that could be an influence to seem more powerful between enemies. But, take away the fantasy and you will see that for example in tha case of Troy was only a big stupid war.

Information about the Trojan war for you. Some archeaologists believe it to be true, others believe it's just a Homeric tale. But, as with all great stories (including Robin Hood and King Arthur) the core of the story is probably true.

nobody knows if it is real.ofcourse the movie is a lil bit changed from the original story of homer.
the trojan war is thought that happened between 1194b.c.-1184b.c.(around 3200 years ago).it only appears in homer's "iliad"(the name comes from "illion" that was another name for troy,so the illiad talks about the war of troy) and the "oddysey"("oddyseus being the greek name for ulysses,so in the oddysey homer talks about the adventures of oddyseus in his way back home to his country itaca).it is very possible that the war happened, the city of troy really existed, and there were found some prooves that there was a war,but all the legendary heroes are just legends, stories.

however, the movie is cool,i saw it too,and i like it too:)

It is not known for sure. In Turkey, where they believe the Trojan city of Ilios to have stood, archaeologists have discovered the ruins of a city much like it that appears to have been ravaged and destroyed by fire. Hope that helps!

The war happened, but its probable the dispute was over trade or something, rather than Helen (the face that launched a thousand ships) and her suitors.

It's true, the war happened but the only thing that is vague is the reason for the war, stories say it's because of the woman, but no one is sure.

it's history that the war happened. the city was found to be in turkey. the rest could be history or myth, we'll never know.
