I have a small leak or crack in the gas tank. I did not know there was a leak and filled the gas tank. I need to know if the J weld is safe to use while the gas is in the gas tank or do I need to take the gas out?

IF J Weld is a "cold" solution than it's OK.
NEVER NEVER use any solution that requires a naked flame.
The only way to repair a leaking fuel tank is to remove it from the vehicle and have it repaired by an expert.
There are NO short cuts.
A tempeory fix if you were stranded in the bush is to rub a cake of soap over the split if it is a small split.
Be careful. Waltz

You can use it, but the fuel will degrade the epoxy. And it is too brittle for the sheet metal of a fuel tank. It is not fuel proof. Most parts stores have a compound that comes in a two-part roll that you can cut, knead together and apply. It will seal, will not degrade with the fuel, and is flexible enough not to break out after the repair.

Good Luck
